Integrated Farming System of Sister Mom Saphan

Sister Mom Saphan age 51 years old, her husband name’s Keo Chhut living in Sramor village, Svay Rompea commune, Svay Teab district, Svay Rieng province. Sister Mom Sophan has 4 children and 1 is grandson and her family job have depending on the rice farming only for eat and sell the rice for support to their children go school. Outside of farming, after she harvested for the rice yield, she always travels to Vietnam for works as sugarcane worker and chili harvesting. Her family is poor family among of families in the village. Her family hasn’t eaten enough food and nutrition because of her family has no home gardening and no money to buy vegetable for cooking food. One more thing her children are still young and studying and they cannot help her on rice farm and home gardening. She has no money for her children go school and buy study materials. “She concerns and pity her children, during she worked as sugarcane worker and Chili harvesting at Vietnam, she said”. She always lacks the rice during October-December for every year.

During the project “Improving Income and Nutrition through Community Empowerment (INCOMEI)” under funding by Heifer International Cambodia and implementing by Santi Sena has working in Sramor villages, Svay Rompea commune, Svay Teab district, Svay Rieng province. Since August 2014, Sister Mom Sophana has decided and joined for saving money with the self Help Group as member named “Sramor Strey Apiwat Sansom Prak” and she has savings with 10,000R-50,000R for every months and she has got some trainings on animal management and raising and home gardening from the project. After she got the training from the project, she has practiced by used the technical and skills what she has learned during the training to designs and scale up home gardening from 60m2 to 150m2 of farming land for home gardening and chicken raising in her farmland. She has borrowed money amount 80$ to access the home gardening with 3% of interest from the group to buy the vegetable seeds and equipment. She has used skills and knowledge what he has learned from the training that provided by project and practice such as; how to makes feeding for chicken, composts, disease prevention and land preparation for vegetable cultivation. She was successfully on vegetable products. She always produced the vegetable products based on timeframe of vegetable cultivation and supply to local market needs such as; ride gourd, green baggage, cucumber, string bean, morning glory and taro etc. After 20-40 days, she can harvest it and supplied to local market and villagers, she said. She expended around 50$ for vegetable seeds and equipment and she got the income around 125$-150$ per season and she have sold chicken 25 heads got money 191.25$ per season (4-5 months).

“After her family have the incomes from chicken raising and vegetables products, her family and children has enough food and vegetable for eat because she has own home gardening and she can collect the vegetables around her home to cooking for her children and she have enough money to buy study materials for children and her children regularly go school and she reserved some money for scale up the chicken raising and vegetable cultivation”. She was saving money with “Sramor Strey Apiwat Sansom Prak” to send her daughter to study at university because now she studying at grade 11, she said.

Outside, she successfully with chicken raising and vegetable cultivation, she has shared the experiences and knowledge on chicken raising to her relative name brother Sun Sarith who have no experience and knowledge on chicken raising. Brother Sun Sarith said that, he knew and have experiences on chicken raising from his member group name sister Mom Saphan who are very kindly with him and she has shared how to chicken raising with successfully. However, after he practiced follow sister Mom Saphan, he mentioned that, he has successful and he has sold chicken and fattening and he got money 675$.

Ms Leu Navy age 56 years old, she is village chief living in Sramor village, Svay Rompea commune, Svay Teab district, mentioned that, sister Mom Saphan is very kind and he would like to shared experience and knowledge what he have learned to other villagers and she is demonstration farm household for other villagers to practice follow her on vegetable products.

Brother Khut Saret is self-help group leader of “Sramor Strey Apiwat Sansom Prak”, he mentioned that, sister Mom Saphan is honesty, friendly and kindly in the group, she is regularly for saving and active members in the group. She is hard working member in the villages and he would like to share experience and knowledge to other members in the group.

Sister Mom Saphan have set up the action plan to scalp up of cage for chicken raising because he want to make more money and save money for her daughter go to school.
